Self Portraits ARE...

[[[ choose one word, then leave a couple lines of space and explain]]]]

Self Portraits ARE...

SPONTANEOUS

for me, taking a self portrait is usually spontaneous in many ways.
sometimes i have an idea bouncing around my brain for a while
which eventually gets executed, unless it's driving me nuts- then i make the self portrait
a lot of times it's
"ooo, i can do *this* now..."

any radical self portrait ideas?
so
here's my profile
http://www.flickr.com/photos/faernworks/
and here's the new group

I'm curious what puts you in the mood to make self portraits...

Is it because you feel like taking pictures of someone, but no one's around?
Is it because you really want to express something about yourself?
Do you carefully plan it?
Is it spontaneous?
if you don't know about it already: http://www.flickr.com/groups/365days/

"The Quick Rules
1. Take one new self portrait every day for a whole year.
2. Tag your photo with "365days"
3. Post that photo to the pool.
4. Look at some other people's photos in the pool and comment.
5. Have fun"

I just joined but since my digital camera is broken and I haven't bought my new one yet, it'll be a few weeks before I'm active on it.

Is anyone from this tribe posting photographic self-portraits on flickr?

WORLD VIEWS - Poster Creation Challenge

This project is about creating social change, by putting out the most powerful spells and imagery to help create positive world views.

Media too often tells us we are not good enough, not beautiful as we are, and that we should be fearful. It promotes government and consumerism, and we need more media that promotes community and creativity.

Let's see positive messages that empower us to believe we are all beautiful, and can do anything we dream.

Since high school, I've been doing slide shows sharing images and spells that offer inspiration and many points of view. The combination of both words and images are much more powerful than either one alone.

Now with a slide scanner, I'm going through my large collection of slides and journals, to create posters that will be put in schools, prisons, group homes, office buildings, or anywhere people may benefit from a shift in perspective.

I've created some examples: http://actionhero.smugmug.com/gallery/2145782 ...and now I challenge you. What messages do you want to put out into the world?

Post your submissions in the photo album at http://actionhero.tribe.net

The prize will be poster size prints of the top three. First place will get all three prints of the top three. Second place gets two, and third gets one.

There will be a panel of judges from the Action Hero Tribe.
There will be a post on Action Hero stating who they are when they are confirmed.
You can submit as many images as you'd like (700 px high -- We'll make a screen saver using all of the best.)

To make these images into posters, they will need come from large files. Small file sizes (72 dpi / 700 px high) are good for the screen saver, but not for posters, so submit them, but know they can't be judged with the ones to be printed.

My scanner scans at a resolution of 4000 dpi. I'm not sure what is needed to make a clear image 2ft high. I'm still new to printing digital. Do you know?

Since I'm hosting the challenge, my work will not be included.

We don't have a deadline yet, but I'm thinking around March or April, so we have lots of time to build interest and do good work.

After the winter holidaze, Action Hero Network will be heading down to central Mexico for a couple months to create a cultural exchange community center in Roblito, and you are welcome to join that adventure as well: www.solomax.com/roblito.html ...lots of good photo opportunities there.

Suggestions welcome as to how we can make this contest even better.

Have fun!

but i have been afraid that i wouldn't be able to committ to the constraints i have set up in my mind...

what do you think-

for a chosen number of days/ 5+( i think)
we take one picture each of those days
at the same time everyday-
whatever fite into our schedules well
of course, on the honor system-
but try and choose a time that you will most likely be able to take the picture...
do you get ready for bed about the same time every night?
what about getting out of bed?
or maybe at around lunch time you have a moment every day?

ok- let's here it-
anyone with me?
at least 5 days in succession
a self portrait
at the same time
everyday

I have alot of things on my blog so don't get discouraged - I posted alot of drawings up on there! It also pops up once you click on my profile, my self-portrait. It took me only 5 minutes to do, no big deal, but it creates an image of me that maybe some can understand - I had a DIFFICULT life to this date. A friend of mine says its "hauntingly beautiful" which is definitely one way to describe it!

I just created a self portrait of myself as an angry bear, chasing after a frightened little man. It is a collage on acrylic on canvas. I drew a bear head, and it is attached to a woman's body, a very green body, and it is not my body, it is a magazine's body, and she I bear is chasing after the little man, which I drew, which is not a self portrait but a portrait of a boy I know.
I don't have a scan or a photo, but the concept of a self portrait that is not literally a portrait of the self intrigues me.
Does anyone else do this?
Do you do it often?
Do you use other images to represent yourself in your work, or do you create something and consider that a self portrait as a whole?

I'm curious. do tell.

TRIBE INVITE -- Photography and Zen

Hello fellow photographers,

I'm cross-posting this on all of the major photo tribes, so fogive me if you see it a bunch.

<o> Photography and Zen <o> is a tribe dedicated to the ways that photographs impact our lives. This tribe is mostly for serious picture takers, but I've also invited snapshot takers, models, and people who don't know the front end of a camera from the back. We sometimes lose site of the non-photographers, butwithout them, we wouldn't have anyone to show our pictures to!

There are plenty of photo sites on Tribe that talk about the technical side, but photography is much more than that. Millions of pictures are taken every second. We inadvertently see hundreds of photos every day. They're a major part of modern society.

Some of the topics will be:

• The ethics of candid shots
• Becoming one with your subject, even if your subject is yourself
• Representing yourself as a photographer with regard to other photographers
• What photo buyers look for in an image
• The significance of photography as an art form
• Photography as an instrument to bring about social change
• Critique of images
• The UNtechnical techniques (such as knowing your instrument enough that it becomes second nature thus enabling you to lose yourself in your art -- stuff like that)
• Erotica vs. porn
• And anything else you want to talk about

So come on by and share your thoughts and/or images.

<o> Photography and Zen <o>

Hi all,

I jst found this tribe. There are some amazing self portraits in the album!!! I often wander off by myself when I'm photographing and shoot some self portraits with my self timer on the camera. I'm not sure why, I just do.

Here's one I just did on a layover at Cleveland's airport a couple of weeks ago.

let's talk about about the gallery...

now we all know that this tribe is not a mature one- in more ways than one- but i am here to talk to you about what we put in the gallery otherwise. Since the changes in the TOU and their rights grab (and the fact that i think they are just trying to cut back on their image hosting) and all i have removed some of my favorite images from this gallery of mine- working in the self portrait is extremely close to my work i do outside of tribe- which i wish i could share here- but it has become too important to me to allow that kind of liscensing- but it bothers me that i am not posting in a gellery that i created anymore. so i am going to have to carefully consider the imagery i put in this gallery.
is anyone else thinking about these things at all?
i am also wondering- what about a blogger on another host?
anyone have good luck with those?
that's something my brother does - he has a blogger and posts one photo everyday for a year-

someone place ideas in my head that can expand this fun we have...

(i UNDERSTAND that anywhere you place your art on the web is a risk so i would appreciate if we could stay away from that commentary i have had soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many messages about that i have become tired of it)

Your other half

This is a project that is being done on the Presentation Ogie tribe (that I moderate).... but it would work just as well in the self portrait tribe... so I thought I'd post it here too....

------------

"YOUR OTHER HALF"

here's the guidelines:

1) take a photo (or scan....or xerox copy) of you (most likely your face...but can be a fuller body/ image of yourself

2) next.... rip it in half... keep one half for this project

3) using one half of you as a solid template, use your own creativity to complete the other half.... you can draw/paint the other side of you, or photograph your image next to something to finish it, or collage the other side... or whatever the heck you want to do to create your other half. It can be realistic, stylized, and or completely abstract- it's your choice

Nobody

Crossroads and intersections
the many choices we make
in life. Just the other night I
had this dream so vivid and
real about the life that once
might have been. Somewhere
in a large home up stairs I awoke
to find myself sleeping alone. In
a room in some need of repair.
But something didn't feel just
right as I ventured down the
stairs there were casual people
all around here and there But
someone was missing And then
it hit me and I knew right away
in this dream I had a wife and
a woman that I could describe to
you not only physically but
idiosyncratically down to the
tiniest detail I could feel that
her absence was not specifically
by choice but by some great
disappointment for some cross
roads I didn't or had yet to choose.

And so we continue on in this way
through our life from day to day
prepetually curious for what one
chance encounter might have been.

Who we are and why we come to
this space in time that would be
our life. We call it freedom of
choice or was the lack of available
options And they say it is the truth
shall make you free But whose
truth and at what price? I remain
happy that I am given all these many
years in my aloneness. So that one day
I could speak of this place where no
hardship is any greater than the truth
we would seek.

And my good friend did ask of me, How
was it for all those years in your home
town where you grew up to become this
person who stands before us now. And I said
that I was 'Nobody' and then she responded
no that can not be so, You are some body
because we think we know you well.

Please do not expect me to explain I said
trust me I was no one and nobody to anyone
where I did grow up. My life had become not
only an open book but every detail had been
seized upon and expanded and exaggerated and
perpetuated out of all reasonable proportion
that for endless days and years at every
conceivable juncture no effort would be spared
to ensure my silence. I was nobody and no one
A Dead Man who would not die. I am Nobody.

If we speak that which can not be spoken should
we not suffer for our ignorance of this world?
Where 'one becomes two' all things become possible
and the self or personality you once thought yourself
to be no longer exist and you are free of all constrictions
of the past. This freedom, however, comes at a heavy
price and if you value your life should remain hidden.

There is an exhibit at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art of Chuck Close's self portraiture that spans nearly forty years. I was going to go on Tuesday, Dec. 6, which is the monthly free day there (I'm not cheap, I'm po!) but finals are this week so I ain't goin'.

The show runs through January, and I'm thinking of saving up my ducats to go closer to Christmas, and maybe get a group of people together who would like to go as well.

Any interest?

most of you probably don't agree with me, but this is really not ok with me and i should have said something before and i apologize for that.

i prefer not removing the images until i have contact with the artist, or tribe- but quite honestly i don't have a ton of time to be spending on the computer anymore- too much stuff is going on in my life, so HOPEFULLY this will rectify itself on it's own...

...

ok- so wyoming and i have been going back and forth about this...
themes would be fun...
i have been thinking...
i would like to ask ~ALL THE OGIES~ (ESPECIALLY ROGER, THE MASTER OGIE HIMSELF)
if we can usesome of the ogie themes as jumping off points for a self portrait theme...?????
my reasoning is that the brainstorming of these themes is so elloquently written in each thread- that i was hoping we could BORROW some of that, since this tribe originated in the generation ogie- i was hoping we could build on that a bit...

any thoughts on this?

any other theme ideas??

lexi and i were talking about a color theme...

more more???

new theme--- multiples

now- let's see- does your camera have a function that takes multiple images on one frame?
that's where i got the idea to do this- my camera has that setting- but if yours doesn't i'm sure it can be setup on photoshop easily... just take a grouping of images in sucession...

does anyone have an interest in doing a self portrait with multiples in mind?

another idea that has to do with this one is that tribe i found about picture booths...

Hi guys,
I am just now finally playing along, and have uploaded my first portrait into the album.

It is sort of trite in a bikini-of-death type way, but it was a very spontaneous shot....

After all, it's not often you stumble upon an old graveyard, in the woods, while wearing a bikini-top and carrying your camera. *giggle*

Some of my close friends say I'm the master of the self portrait but I know they're wrong. They're merely mistaking quantity for quality.
My hat is off to all of you here in this tribe who continue to humble and inspire me with your wonderful work.

p.s.
i was walking the streets of NYC on a recent visit and found an opportunity for a self portrait that was too good to pass up. Posted in this tribe album. More NYC pix in my personal album.

Ok, so Canon's remote cable for tthe 20D, the RS-80N3, retails for about $70, discount online price about $45-50. I ordered a generic one on eBay for $11 (+$5 for shipping), just got it this morning and it's well made and works perfect. Its also compatible with Canon EOS 1V, 1VHS, 3, D60, D30, 10D, 20D, 1D, 1Ds, 1D Mark II, 1Ds Mark II SLR Cameras (excluding Digital Rebel, 300D). Not sure about the Rebel X.

I was bored... went to the bathroom mirror, turned out the lights and played with the flash for some self portraits. Instead of using the flash straight on, i held the camera at chest level and used various objects to bounce the flash back up towards my face... 6 shots in 45 seconds.. posted in my album.

National Portrait Gallery

http://www.npg.org.uk/live/pubself.asp

"The self-portrait has always been an artist's most intriguing vehicle for analysis and self-expression. The unusual freedom offered the artist by the dual occupation of the roles of both subject and creator has meant that self-portraiture has been of especial value and interest in the work of women artists."

the curator...

"Liz Rideal is an artist who, as Art Education Officer at the National Portrait Gallery, has curated exhibitions and run public prgrammes over the last twenty years."
here's and article about her work-
http://www.umass.edu/fac/calendar/universitygallery/events/LizRideal.html
seems cool-
her site...
but- are they self portraits?
yes...

not a self portrait artists- but a very interesting person...
-highlights from the article-
"Had Alfred Stieglitz never taken a photograph in his life, he would still be numbered among the most significant influences in American cultural life in the period before the World War II. As editor of the now legendary magazine Camera Work, as proselytizer for the art of photography, and as director of the 291 gallery and, later, The Intimate Gallery and An American Place, Stieglitz was among the first to introduce the art of the European and American avant-garde to the American public while simultaneously championing, publishing, and exhibiting much of the best photography of the period....

Stieglitz's career spanned more than 50 years and bridged 19th- and 20th-c. styles in photography. Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, Stieglitz studied mechanical engineering in Berlin, Germany. Even while an engineering student he was drawn to photography, and in the 1880s he traveled throughout Europe taking pictures. At the age of 24 he received first prize in a British photographic competition judged by P. H. Emerson, the first of the 150 medals he was to receive in his lifetime....

In the same year that he established the Photo-Secession, Stieglitz began publishing the quarterly Camera Work, which continued until 1917 and featured hand-tipped photogravures, criticism, and reproductions of the work of vanguard artists. In 1908, Stieglitz began exhibiting painting and sculpture at his 291 gallery. Exhibitions included the works of Matisse, Cezanne, Rodin, Braque, O'Keeffe (whom he was to marry in 1924), and primitive African artisans. His own work evolved progressively toward "pure". photography, a direction confirmed by his recognition of Paul Strand, whose photographs comprised the last two issues of Camera Work...."

this i think would be cool-
we could combine groups a little...

i start a drawing of my face- work on it for a designated amount of time.
send it to someone- they work on it for said amount of time- but with something different than the first person- and they send it to a third who does the same--

i think 3 people working on each is plenty-
we would do a few of them-
somehow each person in the group should recieve one- just havn't thought that far yet...

was just breezing through tribes before heading out for the evening and had a theme idea... Laughter..

Maybe more than just a theme, it's a challenge to be able to make a self-portrait of yourself laughing.

Anyway, store that one away for a theme idea one day.

peace,

Roger cries

very interesting, Roger, that you posted this image right as i was considering asking what people thought of self portraits or portraits in general of crying. aside from news photos it's not something i've often seen, but a book came out last fall that covers a small aspect of it (Men Crying - Sam Taylor Wood?). And Nan Goldin's work may have included some (there's not much she shied away from showing).
It's an ongoing project of mine, partly out of curiosity (about the many faces of me, and making the private or intimate view public) and going against taboos, and in part because of what someone else mentioned about "smile" being the autoresponse to cameras in your face. i first explored it when my dad died in '97, but am always reticent to share the images with folks.
roger's pic inspired me to ask if anyone else has images or if it would be ok to post some of mine.

Just uploaded some self portraits on tribe, and those of a few past lovers. Most of the stuff is mixed media. If you get bored, take a look and let me know what you think. Thanks,

Portrait in Words

It is said that in times of great hardships
people become Taoist, but in times of
great abundance they are content to be
confucians. Yea like the poem says,
I did not ask for this burden but it is
the hand I was delt to play. Funny that
on the day you finally think that you
have arrived - a simple voice out of the
wilderness - that is when you realize
that your true learning has only just
Begun.
Gibran writes that "Wisdom stands on
the street corner and calls to us above
the multitude, but we deem her a thing
without worth and despise them that
follow her." Real and true freedom can
have a heavy price. Waking up is
nothing, living it free and undetected
in a world without vision, that is the
real challenge.

~*~*~*~

This Burden

I did not ask for this burden
when one becomes two
In a moment
everything changes
that is when a teacher is needed
- chop wood carry water -
this is only the beginning
As the old Shaman will tell his
apprentice
'I am sorry that you have become
enlightened,
Now get back to work'
Waking up is nothing
living it free and undetected
in a world without vision
that is the challenge
How do you speak a laungage
that has no words?

Outside
November 28, 2002

Stepping outside the picture
Running with the peaceful wild
Nature
The beauty of no structure
Is itself a way of knowing
Knowing that is not structured
As we know it
As we are in our conditioned Lives

Abandon

alone from the age of three
always as your Grandmother
had often said
'the odd man out'
you were the yongest of three
all alone
in the company of an alcoholic care taker
your father had been a drunk
that is why your mother left him
only to return to the intolerable
tyranny of a terriable home life
she had once escaped -
into marriage by the age of 15
my earliest memories
beyond that first cold night
that we came to live with my grandparents
apart from this dark silhouette
completely blocking the light in the doorway
I would never know my father
I never new the beatings
I was to young to remember
and now abandoned to the unspeakable
devices of the very life
my mother had hoped to escape
all those years before
no, my first memories
other than that of long days
alone down by the old long shed,
were of waiting all day
for the school bus to return home
to bring back my brother and sister
only to be abandoned once more
locked out of the house
until my mother came home
who might allow me into the house
no, my most vivid memory
is of running after the car
barefoot on a rough paved road
screaming to the top of my lungs
"Don't leave me, Don't leave me"
once more they were gone

Time Compressed
September 10, 2002

The compression of time
As life goes by
Songs pass more quickly
To the end
Moments no longer linger
On winds of change
Changes come and are gone
We are the same you and I
Some moments are timeless
These are those that we are
When I think of You
These things are true
Time Stands Still

Fear

All fear is death
make peace
the spirit
within
Ego
will not give up
the fight
step aside
one clear moment
there is no blame
plumb the depth
of your being
think outside
the box
let go
the identity
of opposites

Inside Out

If we are constant within change
like the Sun which remains
bright even in secret at night
not only upon it's rising
then contentment is supreme
without the weeds of desire
clogging the portal of awareness
Blind allegiance selfish and uncaring
will never rise up to the heights
Gradual development is the surest way
where as prompt delivery
gained in haste is soon wasted
If you know the firing process
for the gold elixer of illumination
then you have the quality of humilty
with great power in virtue
This is the Spirit of Tao
not detached but engaged on principle

The Mind of Tao

To active the Mind of Tao
dissolve the human Mind
Day by day
Mundane energy wanes
Gradually
Celestial Energy grows
Ture Mind
Building the foundation
There is White within Black
Male within Female
One must use the Bellows
Self-refinement
Requires the True Lead
The Four Signs combine
The Five Elements
Are One Energy
The Three Treasures
Return to One
At the Edge of the Universe
Yin and Yang Merge
Unified Energy
Absolutely Open Nothingness
The State before Birth
Clear and Free
Round and bright
Unfixed to Form or Void
The Gold Elixir Burns
With Illumination
At the Heart
Of Heaven and Earth

Fire!

I am about to lose my home
but that's nothing new
This was the plan all along
I knew I had this job to do
fittingly ironic here at the end
My solitude is Broken
Soon I will pay
for this time in devotion
It just happens to work
that way...

I have already paid the price.

But this story is to hot to handle!
No one wants to get burned
Yea, I am going for the mass
media appeal
I will only survive if I write books.
I will only write books
with the right connections -
these I know as my benefactors.
Now is the time boys and girls
My ass is in the Fire!
that is why I write
I will be a hot commodity.

Hows that for Self Promotion: Poetry

What is coming is all consuming
I can not do this alone
I have earned my degree

i feel as though it would make this tribe even more fun and effective...

Ready to do another 7 day sequence?

i think i am!
sorry all- i had to take a break- got really ill and had way to much work all of a sudden...

i am thinking of the thread i started on the movie SMOKE- we were talking about having a constraint on the image- one thing that every image has in common- like in the movie, the time of day and exact location was the same in each image-

i was thinking of adding an object to each image- not necessarily the same object each day- well- because, the object you would choose would vary each day, wouldn't it? depending on how you felt, or what was going on that day would have something to do with what object you would choose to represent yourself with, in a way.
but to go as far as to choose "my library" or "my rock collectio" is too broad, if you were to choose one example from things like those collections it would vary day to day.
to choose one object- depends on how i feel that day and how that reflects on the things i own, which reflect my identity. they are a part of my identity because they are a part of my life. now, i am not saying that i define myself by the things i own, but that i am now looking back and aknowledging their existence as a part of my life

for the next seven days i am going to limit myself to including one object. whether i am in the image or not will be open.

anyone wanna join me?

replicate someone's self portrait

hey all- i know that some people are interested in picking a self portait and replicating it-
how's a bout we link both in one reply-
the original and the copy?
sound good?
i think this will be an open project... any time you see something in the gallery that you wanna try and replicate- have at it!...
wait-
should we ask permission first? i think if it's one by someone that's not readily contributing to the tribe (ie.talking in threads)- i think we should ask...
k?

SMOKE

did you ever see the movie SMOKE?

i was talking to my boyfriend about that movie last night- actually he brought it up when i told him about our 7 day project-

the point-
the main guy in the movie took his camera outside to take a picture from the exact same spot/ angle and so on of the exact same intersection at the exact same time- everyday for something like 30 years. can you imagine? it didn't matter what was going on in said intersection- only that the shutter released at the same time, everyday.

i think our next project we should have some sort of a constraint... what do you think?

a limit, of some sort...
